Overview

Mud pools, kiwi birds, and towering geysers are waiting for you in the Te Puia nature preserve. With a guided tour through the geothermal valley and a day's worth of free time to see living examples of the traditional Maori lifestyle, you can mix local history and great scenery in a single spectacular package.

Fed by volcanic heat beneath the surface, the Whakarewarewa Thermal Valley holds 150 acres (60 ha) of terrific natural scenery. Walkways take you past steaming waters to enclosures built with classic Maori architecture, where you can find some of New Zealand's favourite wildlife and watch master carvers and weavers at work.

You can get a deeper appreciation for the site with a guided tour filled with insights from your host. Get an up-close look at the 100-foot (30-metre) plume of Pōhutu Geyser, the largest active geyser south of the equator, and learn stories from the area's millennia of history that help you see the surroundings in a new, fuller light.
